Mr. and Ms. Snake Valley

As part of the Snake Valley Festival, the first-ever Mr. and Ms. Snake Valley Pageant was held. Aileen organized the event into four age groups: 0-10, 11-20, 21-60, and over 60. To compete, each contestant had to compete in formal and/or outdoor wear and do a talent. Oh yeah, it cost a $1 to enter.
Here are the winners for the kids age group: Matthew and Ava. They loved their crowns!

All the kids who participated got prizes.

One of the talents: a somersault.

In the older categories, one talent was to put up a tent in a minute. I think I forgot to mention that the talent was limited to one minute and could not include singing, dancing, or playing a musical instrument. That made for some entertaining talents!

 "The Look"

 Hula-hooping

"The Stroll"

Making a peanut butter sandwich blindfolded

The winners for the teen category: Zeke and Tori! Zeke won a cool snake belt buckle and Tori won a manicure from Buffy.

Joseph won Mr. Snake Valley and a $25 gift certificate from D-Bar X Meats.

There was a tie for Ms. Snake Valley: Gretchen and Carolyn. Prizes were a free lunch to Lehman Caves Cafe and a massage from Jenny.

It was getting too late for the Senior Mr. Snake Valley, so Tom had to accept the prize for his dad, a book donated by Range Magazine. And no Senior Ms. Snake Valleys competed--ladies, come give it a try next year!

Thanks to all the sponsors and to Aileen! It was a really fun event, and plans are to include it again next year. There's plenty of time to practice that one-minute talent!

Thanks for a Great Snake Valley Festival

The fifth annual Snake Valley Festival was held this last weekend, and it was a lot of fun. Delicious food, great activities, and terrific community spirit attracted a good-sized crowd. It's great seeing families out enjoying themselves. In addition, thousands of dollars were raised for the Great Basin Water Network (GBWN), which is helping to protect Snake Valley from being dewatered by the SNWA Pipeline project. That money is used to pay attorney's fees as GBWN challenges the Nevada State Engineer's ruling (see more about that here).

A huge thanks to everyone who came (it was great to see new faces this year!), participated, donated, and made this community event such a good time. Check out the Festival page for more photos and the Thank You list. And save June 20-22, 2014 for next year's Festival!

Upcoming Snake Valley Events

Ready for some fun this summer and don't want to travel too far? Fortunately, there's lots going on right here in Snake Valley!

In addition to Tuesdays at the community center in Baker, Ladies' lunches every other Thursday, jam sessions Friday nights at T&D's, we have some extra events to look forward to.

The Great Basin Astronomy Festival will be June 14-16, with over 40 astronomers coming to help lead park visitors into the cosmos via a variety of programs. This astronomy festival keeps getting bigger and better, and is a great opportunity to learn more about what we can see from our fantastic night skies.

The Snake Valley Festival will be June 15-17, with a wide variety of events from an ice cream social, wine tasting, breakfast, parade, booths, yard sale, entertainment, silent auction, barbeque dinner, water fight, music, auction, 5K run, children's games, book sale, and much more. The schedules of the two festivals for the third weekend in June are being planned so that attendees will be able to do a lot of activities at each one, so it's a wonderful time to be in Snake Valley.

The fourth annual BioBlitz at Great Basin National Park will focus on Diptera-flies. It will be held June 19-21, so extend your stay to learn more about the area. Join entomologists, naturalists, and enthusiasts from all over the U.S. to help find what flies live in the national park. Over the past few years, six fly species new to science have been found. You could possibly find another one! The park is providing free camping to participants during the event.

Fourth of July at EskDale is always a great event, with yummy food, entertainment, and fireworks with close-up seating. Want to get an early start that morning? Sign up for the 5k/10k/half marathon!

Saturday of Labor Day Weekend, September 1, is the Snake Valley Days Barbeque and Dance. This event has been held since the 1960s and is a great way to reconnect with Snake Valley friends.

Snake Valley may not have a lot of residents, but we know how to have fun! Join us for these fun events, and check out the calendar on the side of the Protect Snake Valley blog to keep up to date with what's coming up. If you have events to add, please leave a comment!

Festival Music

Silver Sage Band playing at the Border Inn
If you're looking for some music, the Snake Valley Festival will have lots for you!
Friday evening, June 17, there will be music and entertainment during the ice cream social, which will be held at the Baker Community Center. This is right next to the playground, so it's perfect for family fun, with plenty of space for the younger kids to run around.

On Saturday from 1 - 3 p.m., entertainment will be provided at T&D's, located on main street in Baker. Roberta has lined up a great array of entertainment, so this will be an excellent way to kick back and relax after an exciting morning of browsing the booths and yard sale, watching the parade, and bidding on items at the silent auction.

Saturday evening at the Border Inn, Kirk Hoggard from the Silver Sage Band will provide roving music during the barbeque and after the live auction. He has donated two tickets to his Silver Sage Band Chuckwagon Show, which would be a great evening out to enjoy even more music!

So come on out and enjoy a great weekend! For a full festival schedule, click here.
